Unfortunately, we’re all going through a bit of a rough patch right now, especially with the added stress of summatives and e-learning. Not to mention our favourite worldwide pandemic. You’ve probably been feeling sick or nervous thanks to all of the COVID-19 content in the media, seeing the numbers of victims and death tolls on the rise, what each country has been up to, as well as the politics revolving around the disease itself.

Though it feels like a disadvantageous time and nothing is going quite like how you wanted it to be (and to be honest, it kind of is), now is definitely not the time to panic or sulk around. Keeping yourself calm, occupied, and having fun is the best coping mechanism at a time like this!

So, let’s all try to forget about the fact that we’re all literally quarantined at home, never knowing when we’re going to see the light of day ever again, but rather, immerse ourselves into new worlds and realities! It’s the closest thing that we’ll get to being outside or learning a new thing or going to a new place anyways. And what better way to do that than to watch something Science Fiction? In Science Fiction stories, we are able to explore totally new and foreign concepts, places that we never knew could exist, making them super interesting and mind blowing. Here are some popular ones! (All available on Netflix)

MOVIES:

  • Inception – One of the most critically acclaimed Science Fiction movies of all time, mind blowing and completely original in its storytelling. Cobb is an extractor that goes into people’s dreams to steal their ideas. In order to get back to his family in the United States, he assembles a team to perform an inception; the planting of an idea.

  • Arrival – This is a rather unconventional Science Fiction movie, but still manages to perfectly fit into its genre by incorporating futuristic concepts and the idea that aliens really do exist somewhere out there. This story tells of a linguistics professor who is hired to decipher what aliens newly landed on the planet are trying to say.

  • Snowpiercer – This movie immediately immerses you into a whole new world– or rather, a whole new train. From the director of Parasite, this movie tells of a post-apocalyptic world where the remaining inhabitants of the Earth live on a single train. It tackles many themes that are relevant in today’s society as well, most notably class division.

  • The Martian – You really can’t get more Science Fiction than this movie. With its thrilling scenes, it will get you on the edge of your seat, heart beating rapidly. The story starts off with a group of astronauts who had no choice but to evacuate their mission, however, leaving one astronaut behind, which means he must learn to survive (and struggle) on his own.

  • Wall–E – This one is a classic animation that will always remain in many of our childhoods. The storyline follows a robot responsible for cleaning up the Earth named Wall-E into a starliner called Axiom, which humans have inhabited for centuries due to the instability of the Earth.

  • BONUS SHOW: Lost in Space – This is completely relevant to the Science Fiction genre as a whole. From crash landing onto a new planet to talking robots, the Robinson family does whatever it takes for them to survive and reach their final destination as colonizers, Alpha Centauri. They experience many challenges and hardships along the way, but they do it as a family.
