by Bott Chant Ban, G11 All about the coronavirus!
What do you need to know about Corona? Well, it’s a type of alcoholic drink made in Mexico- wait, this article isn’t about beer?
On a more serious note, the coronavirus is a strain of virus that’s related to illnesses such as the flu or the common cold. This virus is also related to the SARS and MERS diseases, and this specific strain of coronavirus is called a novel coronavirus, which means that it hasn’t been identified yet. Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning that they transfer to humans from animals.
Usual symptoms include:
- respiratory symptoms,
- fever,
- coughing,
- breathing difficulties
In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), kidney failure and even death. The virus spreads through contact, so avoid people who have the virus. However, it’s noted that coronavirus has not been confirmed to be extremely deadly, it might have the severity of the flu or cold.
Luckily (or unluckily, depending on your viewpoint), ISPP has yet to close down due to a case of coronavirus. However, in other parts of the world (such as China), there are many other cases of infected patients. At this time of writing, there are currently 94,302 cases of infection, with 3,221 people dead, and 51,204 recovered.
Of course, there are ways of preventing yourself from getting the virus:
- distance yourself from people who do have the virus, as it’s spread through contact such as body fluids.
- When coughing or sneezing, cover your mouth or wear a mask so that your fluids don’t stick on other people and make them sick.
- Wash your hands regularly, you can use the sanitiser stations around the school grounds.
There is no cure for this virus, but the best repellant we have right now is knowledge, and with knowledge you can reduce the risk of contracting the disease and will reduce the chance of affecting other people.
